The Getaway is a Latin American & Caribbean–inspired restaurant and cocktail bar. Our menu changes seasonally and is handcrafted with love. Our flavors are bright, pure, and inspired by local ingredients. We are bringing you an “out of the city” experience in the heart of downtown Charleston.

Emily Hahn

Executive Chef, Events Coordinator

Emily has been cooking in the South for twelve years. A graduate of the New England Culinary Institute, she has worked under Ed Vasaio at Mamma Zu in Richmond, Virginia, as well as James Beard Award winner, Mike Lata at FIG restaurant in Charleston. Hahn's passion for food, flavor, and travel led her to Patagonia, Chile, and inspired her empanada business, Empanada Mamma. Her food is pure, bright in flavor, and expresses her love for cooking with every bite. In 2015, she competed on Food Network’s Chopped, and was named a “Rising Star Chef” by Food & Wine Magazine and Eater Charleston’s “Chef of the Year.” In 2016, Emily competed on season 14 Bravo network’s Top Chef.

Darren Fallon

Bar Manager

Darren has worked in the Charleston food and beverage industry since 2010. As a Culinary Arts graduate from the Culinary Institute of Charleston, he began his career in the kitchen working for Jeremiah Bacon at Oak Steak House and under Micheal Perez at Indaco. Shifting gears, he quickly pursued his passion for cocktails and spirits, ultimately bringing him to the front of the house. His creative cocktails and knowledge of flavor landed him the bar manager position at The Watch. He's been “shaking it up” with a smile ever since, and continues to develop The Getaway's beverage program with focus and creativity. Darren loves traveling to the Caribbean and spending time with his best girl, his pit bull, Stella.

cameron fogg

Sous Chef

Born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina, Cameron has been passionate about cooking for as long as he can remember. A natural in the kitchen, Cameron joined Brannon Florie in opening 17 North, The Granary, and The Rarebit. At just 22 years old Cameron helmed the Rarebit kitchen for three years, creating his unique takes on southern diner food. He began working with Chef Emily Hahn at Warehouse, where he was promoted to Sous Chef before he was asked to join her at The Getaway. Cameron continues to be a dedicated and passionate cook, loves traveling to South America, and when he is not at work he can be found spending time with his blue pit bull, Lola or surfing on Folly Beach.

This South America-inspired watering hole and eatery mixes seasonal sangrias and versatile cocktails from traditional spirits like pisco and smoky rums, complemented by fish stew, ropa vieja, coconut shrimp and other shareable Latin fare; the hangout’s narrow dining room is framed with handsome wood embellishments, a long bar and a row of two-seat booths that leads toward the tucked-away, open-air patio.
Nearly every dish reveals Hahn’s mastery of char and spice, but our favorites include grilled chapa bread soaked in buttery vinaigrette and topped with shaved artichokes and mushrooms; coconut shrimp served with orange marmalade; and of course, the empanadas of the day, ready to dunk in garlic aioli and fiery chimichurri sauce.
If you haven’t stopped by The Getaway yet, get yourself over there ASAP. Whether you’re looking for a relaxed atmosphere to get a drink or trying to shake up your usual restaurant routine, they have you covered. They’re bringing their international flavors to Upper King; nestled where you normally wouldn’t find them.
